Re-evolutionize?? Oh, oh...another new media company making up words! But wait...there is method to our madness.
The reality is organizational learning has been experiencing significant change over the last few years. It has been described by some as a revolutionary change in the landscape. We're not so sure that's true.
Most of what we see is more accurately described as a rapid evolution from the tried and true classroom learning model to a blend of techniques that attempt to leverage some of the strengths of the online learing environment. The more radical and revolutionary developments in web technology are still viewed with some suspicion by most learning developers.
That is not surprising when you consider that the very idea of a revolution suggests change fraught with instability and danger. Consider too that most new technologies which ultimately manage to change the game on a fundmental level, succeed at first as more modest adaptations of existing technologies before bringing large numbers of users into completely new and different applications. Witness the cell phone - at first merely a portable phone and only comparatively recently the rising star of social connectivity and "there's an app for that" fame.
So why re-evolution? Because at Circle we think it's time for another evolution in online learning. A more radical one. One that recognizes and responds to the real differences in the way learning should work online. Here's what we mean. Online learning should...
The first round of online learning applications adapted what we knew about classroom based learning to the online world. This next evolution will see innovative learning designs and applications that extend the idea of what learning on the web can be. It will capitalize on the social elements of learning in a connected environment. Learners will be at the centre of their own web of learning solutions. They will have many different tools providing the ability to learn what they need to know, when they need to know it.
It will be a re-evolution!
